Is Vision Therapy Worth It?

You might be wondering…what even is Vision Therapy

Have you ever heard a parent say that their kid hates reading or has a hard time focusing, even though their eye exam was normal? It sounds confusing at first because most people think vision problems only mean blurry eyesight but that’s not always true. Sometimes, the real issue is how the eyes work together, not just how clearly someone can see.

This is where Vision Therapy comes in.

Vision Therapy is like a customized program designed to help improve eye coordination, tracking, focusing, and how the brain processes visual information. It’s usually used for things like lazy eye, eye coordination problems, concussion-related vision issues, and Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD).

It’s surprising how many children and adults don’t realize that this is something they would benefit from.

Vision Therapy may help with:

  • children struggling with reading or school,
  • people who get headaches after screens,
  • adults with eye strain or dizziness,
  • anyone with tracking or coordination issues,
  • concussion patients and,
  • people with binocular vision dysfunction.

Vision Therapy may also help improve:

  • eye coordination,
  • focusing,
  • reading fluency,
  • concentration,
  • headaches,
  • double vision and,
  • eye fatigue.

For people with binocular vision dysfunction, even the smallest eye misalignment can drive the brain to work overtime in order to fuse the image from both eyes. That can lead to headaches, dizziness, trouble reading, and feeling exhausted after visual tasks.

Common Symptoms include:

  • losing your place while reading,
  • skipping lines,
  • rubbing eyes constantly,
  • headaches after screens and,
  • poor hand-eye coordination.

These are common symptoms. A thorough eye exam will reveal the cause and how it can be treated.

A little more about Binocular Vision Dysfunction:

The picture above is a little uncomfortable to look at, right? Now imagine experiencing that kind of visual discomfort every single day. For some people, that’s what reading, focusing, or even looking around can feel like when their eyes are not working together properly.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction happens when the eyes are slightly misaligned and struggle to work as a team.

The good news? These conditions can be improved! Vision Therapy and other treatments may help reduce symptoms and make everyday activities much more comfortable. Reach out to your local optometrist and book an eye exam to learn more about your visual health and find the best path forward for you.

Bottom Line:

According to the Ontario Association of Optometrists, 1 in 4 school-aged children may have a vision problem that can affect learning and development.

So, is Vision Therapy worth it?

It absolutely can be. However, improvement takes consistency, time, and effort. Some people will notice a difference within a few months, while others may require longer treatments.
